Provan Hall

Provan Hll is in the Easterhouse area of Glasgow and is widely regarded as the best preserved medieval fortified country house in Scotland.

In the early 12th century. the Earl of Cumbria, granted a large area of around 5000 acres to the Church. It was financially supported by the Prebendary of Barlarnock, who was one of the senior officials from the Glasgow Cathedral. It was viewed as an important post, and previous holders of the post are believed to have included two of the Stewart Kings illegitimate some, and possibly King James IV as well.

Provan Hall is set in Auchinlea Park. The first building was built around 1460 and would have been used as the Prebendary of Barlarnock’s office to oversee the estate. Later, in the early 1500’s, the post of Prebendary was given to William Baillie, and over the years, passed through many generations of the Baillie family. The estate was passed to Sir William Baillie, the Lord President of the Court of Session in 1562.

The courtyard, and possibly the second building were built by Sir Robert Hamilton after he took ownership of Provan Hall in 1647. 20 years later he sold Provan Hall to the burgh of Glasgow. The Hamilton family rented it until 1729, and the Burgh then sold Provan Hall.

Dr John Buchanan purchased the property, making changes and carrying out renovations. After the last of their family passed away, a private group bought Provan hall, and passed it to the National Trust of Scotland.

Mary Queen of Scots is thought by some to have had an affair with William Baillie, and stayed at Provan Hall for around 6 weeks as his guest. Her father, King James V also regularly stayed at Provan Hall.

Although Mary Queen of Scots is reported to haunt numerous locations throughout the UK, it is not thought that Provan Hall is one of them. There are, however, many other reported hauntings.
A man with a dagger has been seen in the master bedroom. It is said that he returned from being at war for over 2 year. On his return, he discovered that his wife had had a child, and given its age, was obvious to him that it wasn’t his. In a rage, he stabbed his wife and slit the childs throat.

Reston Mather was the last private owner of Provan Hall. His spirit ahs been seen on the staircase. He is usually seen to be wearing sark clothes, a black hat, and has a white beard. He died in 1934 of breathing difficulties at Provan Hall. People standing near the stairs have reported frrling breathless and having a ticghtness in their chest.
A medium has picked up on a member of the Baillie Family while on an investigation at Provan Hall.

The spirits of a woman and a young boy have been spotted at a window on the upper floor and staff, as well as visitors have reported to seeing a face at the dining room window.
It has also been claimed by a paranormal investigation team that they may have come into contact with King James V. A medium told of how she sensed a small man with a curly hair and a beard, which matched the description of the King.

This is an interested carving around a tree in the park.
